The school’s Expected Schoolwide Learning Results (ESLRs) were created through a collaborative process that started in September of 1998 and continued through February of 1999. By the spring of 1999, Moreau Catholic’s ESLRs were firmly established in the life of the school.
Over the past eleven years, the school has continually revisited the ESLRs and emphasized the importance of incorporating them into everything that the school does. During the 2004-5 school year, a schoolwide ESLR rubric was created as a tool to assess student achievement of ESLRs. This was adopted in a collaborative process that included Focus Groups participation as well as approval from the Academic Council, the Mission Integration Committee and affirmed by the Board of Trustees.
Additionally, during the same year, all departments examined the ESLRs and defined how department-specific curriculum helped students to achieve each of the ESLRs. As a result of that work, each department has created ESLR-Related Student Outcomes that clearly relate department curriculum to student ESLR achievement as well as strategies to assess that achievement. We have also begun a process of linking the ESLRs in our curriculum maps to identify the extent to which they are incorporated into our curriculum.
Recent Evolution of the ESLRs
In the Spring 2010, focus groups met to examine our current ESLRs, other school models, and discuss any changes that better represent what we envision for Moreau graduates. Groups discussed and answered the following prompts: In what way(s) do our ESLRs represent what we want a Moreau graduate to be?As a focus groups: brainstorm ideas, discuss, and record your responses to the following questions:
What do we want MCHS students to know, understand, and be able to do by graduation?
In light of our 1:1 laptop program, use of technology in learning, and how you perceive MCHS today, what would you keep of our current ESLRs? What would you change?
Considering the four Holy Cross Themes: educating hearts and minds, being family, building respect, and bringing hope; how could we reflect these in our ESLRs
As a result of this Focus Group Meeting, we heard from all groups that the core ESLRs were agreed upon by the entire community. There was a sense from the faculty and staff that the ESLRs accurately reflected the graduation outcomes of our students. However, there was also the sense that the ESLRs could be better tied to our foundational philosophy as a Holy Cross School. Below is a proposal that encompassed many of the suggestions of focus groups in a revised alignment that fit the IFT model that our community is familiar with.
